Oh, they let her go...! She remembers being confined to a cell, but they hadn't really done much but feed her really nasty food. And give her nasty syrup. So when she starts walking through the forest, she finds they actually gave her shoes and a long-sleeve for her troubles. Her hair was let down from the usual pigtails, giving a little extra protection for her ears. So... she was actually doing pretty well.

Hm. Which way was home...

She puts on her best brave face and opens her journal.]

I'm sorry I got lost, but the bad guys let me go... Papa, are you there? Don't worry! I'm okay! I was really brave!

[The sudden realization that she's okay and back in a safer place brings a few tears to her eyes, and she wipes them away.]

I'm sorry I left, but I'm here, s-so... I wanna go home now.

Nothing wrong with learning. With I could help, but archery's not my strong point.

Yeah, I use a sword. Been sparring ever since I was a kid.

I'm a lot better than I used to be, but I've still got a long way to go. There's a pretty big difference between sparring with wooden swords and actual fighting.

Ouch, but wooden swords can give you splinters~!

And they hurt if you hit hard enough, but that's nothing compared to a real weapon.

Yeah, that must be real scary, when you fight with real stuff...

Playing and real fighting are nothing alike. When you're fighting for your life or those of others, you have to take things seriously. It gets pretty rough.

Mmhm! I don't like real fighting, but my mama says sometimes you have to protect stuff you care about...

Exactly. Sometimes you have to protect the things that matter.

Yeah! Your papa and mama, and all your uncles and aunties! And your friends—and even people you don't know, like the superheroes in books do!
