12th Teddy Bear [Accidental Video/Action]

[Standing outside the school like a champ is Elicia, with her journal dropped to the side to catch her in the screen—she looks very focused, and her gloved hands are raised up ~~like she's about to open an old Egyptian tomb~~. After a moment, she speaks in a commanding voice:]

Miss Na-la of the healing! My name is Elicia Hughes! It's spelled E-L-I-C-I-A! I'm five years old. [...an addendum] And I can count to 16!

U-um, I wrote you a letter, so— [she fiddles with her winter coat and unfolds a big blue piece of construction paper] —here! I'll read it...

Hi... Miss Nala! How are you today? I'm okay, but I really really really... wanna learn how to fix people's owies. Sometimes I hit my toe or get a cut, so I know it can hurt! So I wanna make sure... I can help if people get hurt, too. A-and I'm doing really good in school, so I'll be good for you, if you show me how!

[She looks up from the paper.]

I like helping people. I think you do, too! So let's be friends, okay...?

BUT. He's found talkative little kids aren't so bad these days, and he may as well get used to them.] I like watching clouds. And playing games like shougi and go.

...Sho-geee? What's that?

[She has no idea what 'go' is either, but one step at a time, says she!]

It's a special kind of board game you play with another person. Each player gets twenty pieces, and you take turns trying to capture the other guy's pieces. They look kinda like this. [He fishes around in a pocket of his flak jacket and pulls out a certain shogi piece, the king.]

Oh! Like chess!

That's uncle Roy's favorite! You gotta catch the biggest piece and you say 'check mate!!', and there's a king and a queen!

Aa. Yeah, that does sound a lot like it. [He grins, glad he's been saved the trouble of explaining the rest of it.] Though the pieces might be different - there's no queen in shogi anyways.

...Then is there a princess?

Heheh. 'Fraid not. But there's generals - a gold and a silver one. [Which is cooler than princesses, not to mention shinier sounding.]

Generals? What's those?

Are they like heroes?

Depends. A good one might be. They work for the king and lead his armies.

Woooow, they work for a king? They must be the toughest, if the king likes them that much... What other people are in sho-gee?

Well there's the pawns - can't have an army without soldiers, after all. And then there's the knights, the lances, and one rook and one bishop. [And then, as he feels bad for distracting her from what she'd been out here to do:] No talkative healing spirits though.

Ooooh, right. There should be healing spirits in games! That way people can be fixed and everyone wins!

That's a good idea. Maybe someday there'll be a game like that. [He cocks his head, listening.] I think Nala thinks that's a good idea too.

[She smiles a big smile.]

Mhmm! No one should have to get hurt! But I know sometimes it's gonna happen even if you wish really really hard, so you gotta be ready to heal up people's owies.

That's probably one of the smartest things I've heard in a while. [He has two friends that are medics back where he's from. They were teenagers before they figured that one out.] Does that mean you wanna be a doctor, or will that just be a side job?

...Mmm....

Mama says I should do what I like, and I really like helping people!

Maybe I should be a doctor!

That's one of the better ways of doing it. Would take a lot of work, though.

That's okay—I'll work my hardest, no matter what!

[ffff what is this. Ninjas shouldn't find things cute, no matter how much Ino and Sakura beg to differ.]

Heheh. Good for you. Then don't let someone like me hold you up. [He raises a finger to the air, saying nothing for a second so that maybe Elicia will hear what he does.] It sounds like Nala's ready to talk with you.

[OMIGOSH you're right! D:]

I gotta go learn stuff! Bye!!

[She runs toward the school, stops, and then runs back.]

What's your name, mister?

[He laughs, leaning back in his seat.]

It's Shikamaru. [Kind of a mouthful, he knows.]

Mr. Shi-ka-ma-ru! I'm Elicia! I'll talk to you later, 'kay?

Heh, okay. [He gives a little salute.] It was nice meeting you, Elicia.

[She returns the salute, standing straight and tall, before running off to talk to Nala.]
